What algorithmic bias means in auditable terms
From an audit perspective, algorithmic bias is a systematic deviation in AI model outputs producing disproportionately unfavorable results for a defined group. To be auditable, you need: an operational fairness definition, quantifiable metrics, and acceptability thresholds defined before evaluation.
The audit framework: 5 phases
Based on ISO 42001 Annex A controls and accumulated assessment experience:
- Scope and protected variables. ISO 42001 Annex A control A.3 requires organizations to explicitly define relevant groups per system.
- Fairness metrics selection. Disparate Impact Ratio, Equalized Odds, Predictive Parity, Calibration. ISO 42001 Annex A control A.5 requires documenting evaluation criteria.
- Evaluation data preparation. Dataset must be representative. Control A.6 establishes data traceability requirements.
- Measurement and analysis. Measure multiple metrics as they can contradict each other. Document all metrics evaluated, not just favorable ones.
- Documentation and mitigation plan. Each finding documented with: affected variable, metric used, obtained vs threshold value, estimated impact, and proposed actions. Clause 10.2 requires traceable corrective actions.

Common audit mistakes
